Planning to insulate your roof with polystyrene?

SENSORS DESIGNED & MADE IN GERMANY

Plan how you will check for water beneath it.

Install HUM-ID sensors while the boards are accessible. After the roof is finished, you can check for hidden moisture at the sensor locations — without opening the roof for every check.

  • WHY PLAN AHEAD?
A ceiling stain does not tell you where water is collecting in your roof.

Water can travel beneath polystyrene and enter your home far from where it has collected. Without a starting point, finding it may mean opening several areas of the roof — and paying to restore them afterwards.

HUM-ID sensors provide a starting point by showing which sensor locations are wet. This helps narrow down further investigation and make better-informed decisions about where opening the roof may be necessary.
  • DON’T WAIT FOR THE FIRST STAIN
Check for hidden moisture before it becomes a visible problem.

Periodic checks help detect moisture at the sensor locations — potentially before water finds its way indoors and damages ceilings, finishes or furniture.

Finding a problem earlier gives you an earlier opportunity to investigate its cause and take action.

HUM-ID checks for moisture at installed sensor locations. It does not guarantee detection of all water within the roof or prevention of damage.
  • WHEN TO DISCUSS INSTALLATION
The best time is before the polystyrene is covered.

Planning a new roof or renovation that includes replacing the polystyrene? Discuss HUM-ID in advance so the sensors can be included in the installation sequence.

For a finished roof, installation needs to be assessed individually: access to the polystyrene is required to fit the sensors.

How water gets beneath polystyrene

Small defects can let water in. Closed roof layers can make it difficult to get out.

1

Leaks are not the only source

Rainwater can enter through damaged waterproofing, failed seams or gaps around pipes and roof edges. It can then travel through cracks and joints, reach the gaps between polystyrene boards and spread over the vapour control layer below. Condensation can also form when moisture inside the roof reaches a sufficiently cold surface. Moisture may also be trapped during construction if wet layers are covered before they dry.

2

Heat and weight can cause movement

Under high temperatures and sustained loads, polystyrene can change size and gradually compress. If parts of the roof settle unevenly, the waterproofing comes under extra stress, especially around parapets, pipes and other fixed structures. Damage can open a path for water into the roof.

3

Everyday work can damage waterproofing

Installing or servicing solar panels, water tanks and other equipment can damage the waterproofing. A dropped tool, an unprotected support or a poorly fitted fixing can leave a small defect that lets rainwater beneath the surface.

4

Once water gets in, how does it get out?

Water trapped beneath polystyrene can be very difficult to remove without work on the roof itself. It is hidden beneath screed and waterproofing, with limited routes for drainage and drying. Repairing a leak stops new water entering but does not remove water already inside. Opening the roof and specialist drying may be needed.

Know what is happening beneath the polystyrene before stains appear on the ceiling.

HUM-ID lets you check for wetness at installed sensor locations and track changes with repeat inspections.

The sensors work without batteries. Results are obtained during a reading: the system does not send automatic alerts between checks.

HUM-ID passive wetness sensor
1. Install while the boards are accessible
Sensors are fitted into the underside of the polystyrene boards according to an agreed layout, before the next roof layers are installed. Their number and positions are selected to suit the roof construction.

2. Check after the roof is finished
A specialist reads the sensors through suitable roof layers using a HUM-ID reader and app. The roof does not need to be opened for each routine check.

YOUR INSPECTION RECORD
A HUM-ID report records the inspection date and the sensors checked. Wet locations can be marked on a roof plan or photograph.

Share the report with your roofing professional and compare results after rain and during dry weather.
